Hunting Knives
Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 11:34AM A good hunting knife can be a hunters best friend. Well, maybe second best (a hunters weapon of choice always comes first). But any experienced hunter will tell you how important their hunting knife is to them from preparing for the hunt, during the hunt, and after. A solid hunting knife will save you time and aggravation so you can focus on tracking down your game. And there will be times during your hunting trip when you will thank your hunting knife for saving your ass when you did not expect to need it. You'll use your hunting knife to prepare your hunting position, field dress your kill, kindling for fire, to protect yourself, and general camping uses.
There are many options to consider for your hunting knife. You need to think about how you will use the hunting knife. Ask yourself what size game you go after, overnight or day trips, do you need quick and easy access, and what size knife will you need? Hunting knives that are part serrated and are hooked are very versatile for general use, field dressing, and can protect you from danger if big enough. Straight blade hunting knives in a sheath are tough and are quickly and easily accessible if you need it in a hurry for hunting big game in dangerous situations. Folding blade hunting knives are more compact for storage and can be convenient for packing. Utility hunting knives can have multi-tools to help with a variety of situations.
Many of the major hunting knife manufacturers make awesome hunting knives that are ergonomically designed for comfort and function. And the good ones will last forever for many generations. I personally like the Buck Knife Alpha Hunter. You can get this as a straight blade, folding blade, with or without hook, and a variety of handle options.
